The real win for OHB here is the support this may win him in the ever-expanding beltway of security and defense contractors around DC, largely resident in W Virginia. This could be the tipping point for his campaign there, and a very handy 5 more EVs..
Think he's got Virginia already.
Powells not there to appeal tp anti-war lefties. He's hitting independents, older voters, military families, and conservatives aghast at what the campaign has become
It steals a whole day's news cycle from McCain.
It rubbishes the Ayers stuff and the Muslim stuff. It's like a grown up just called out the GOP campaign for the spiteful hysterical lies it is peddling.
That needs to be done, and urgently, before someone gets killed
You know McCain hired the same guys to slime Obama with the Bill Ayers robocalls as Rove/Bush hired in 2000 to slime McCain with the "Does knowing John McCain has a black child* make you more or less likely to vote for him?"? At the time he called them Hate Calls, and there's a fair chance they cost him the nomination (this was in South Carolina).
A lovely glimpse of the journey from 2000 McCain to 2008 McCain.
Also, I do wonder just who *is* there to appeal to "anti-war lefties". He's got all his supporters so tightly on-script that you're not supposed to even mention the war.
* Adopted from Bangladesh, charmingly.
Yes, I do know about the hate talk express becoming the thing he railed against when he ran vs. Rove/Bush/Cheney. It's sad.
What I want to see is the total implosion of the Republican party as it has become now - and the utter discrediting of the neo-con hate machine/war machine, along with Milton Friedman economics.
Obama is an imperfect canididate. I am especially concerned about him talking about bombing Pakistan.
None the less his advantages far outweigh his disadvantages, as far as I am concerned. Not least temprementally.
Can't spell today, typing too fast
I do look at the Whigs in US history and wonder how long we have to wait for an ascendant 3rd party - I suspect whatever rises from the ashed of McCain/Palin 08 is emphatically not going to be it.
The game's not broke, it's fixed.

While success against the armed enemy was rare, Powell’s ARVN unit punished the civilian population systematically. As the soldiers marched through mountainous jungle, they destroyed the food and the homes of the region’s Montagnards, who were suspected of sympathizing with the Viet Cong.
Old women would cry hysterically as their ancestral homes and worldly possessions were consumed by fire.
“We burned down the thatched huts, starting the blaze with Ronson and Zippo lighters,” Powell recalled. “Why were we torching houses and destroying crops? Ho Chi Minh had said the people were like the sea in which his guerrillas swam. ...
“We tried to solve the problem by making the whole sea uninhabitable. In the hard logic of war, what difference did it make if you shot your enemy or starved him to death?”
For nearly six months, Powell and his ARVN unit slogged through the jungles, searching for Viet Cong and destroying villages.
