The Sharpener
My first post on The Sharpener is now up, called Hearts and Minds.
Regular readers of this blog will recognise the subject matter, but for future posts I hope to diversify away from familiar territory and explore other political subjects besides terrorism. However, we're approaching the anniversary, and so it's still much on my mind.

I access the link now. Be aware of the Anniversay Effect as you approach the trauma date. I will be thinking of you all as the next few weeks approach.
You said in the piece that you want to undersatand why the bombers did what they did on 7/7. Perhaps it is because they identify themselves primarily as Muslim and not British or any other nationality and they feel (misguidely)that they are as a people under siege and that there only response is to fight back in such an extreme way.
If we as people are to change this then I believe it is the political system as it currently is that needs to be changed. Like it or not those in power in the west believe that they are right and that they are the only ones who are truely democratic. They think they have the right to impose their beliefs on others regardless of the consequences
Likewise those in the Muslim world who are in power believe that we in the west are corrupt and the only way to stop the attacks on their faith is to fight in the way that they do.
Result ??. Stalemate. Where do we go from here ??. I wish I knew.
Oh and one final point. It is an eyeopener to actually read the history of Iraq and see what went on in the past. Way back to ancient times occupying armies found themselves in a quagmire of their own making that took them years to get out of.
History has a nasty habit of repeating itself
Dr Deb, thanks for the info about th anniversary effect, explains a lot. I have sent your article and others around the survivor group, where it has been warmly recieved with thanks
Think you need to rest up, Rachel. Must be tough right now so can you take a break, even if it's just an hour down the park with J? You've done a lot this year, you know.
