Happy Birthday Liberty

75 years of fighting to protect civil liberties, defending human rights.

Liberty is a small team of cheerful, committed, clever, generous, dedicated, passionate, brave people, crammed uncomplainingly into a far-too-small, messily over-crowded office in Southwark. They do everything on a shoe-string, they garner enormous respect for what they do, they work bloody hard as a team - and they deserve your support in defending our common values for precious little reward.

You might want to join them, right now we need them more than ever. See this piece from Shami in today's Guardian to remember why.

Happy Birthday Liberty, from lots of fans

I'm sorry, although a well written piece by Shami, and I am a great fan of hers, I thought it was not only a waste of space in the Guardian, but also a waste of Shami's time.

To be specific, I am thinking of the 60,000+ disenfranchised citizens who need their voices to be heard because without the vote convicted prisoners are merely warehoused out of sight and mind.

There's a first time for everything, Rachel, but I couldn't disagree with you more.
Liberty are embarrassingly biased organisation. Somewhere in this hall of shame, there's an interview with Shami Chakrabarti, in which it almost sounds like her teeth are being pulled as she grudgingly admits that the illegal barring of Geert Wilders was wrong.

To even get a statement from them it took endless and near-constant pressure from the BBC and a network of bloggers, like myself, over nearly 10 days. When I joined the pressure group and made a call myself after 3 days of no statement, I was told it had "blown over" and wasn't of any interest. Without that constant pressure to clarify what their position on free speech really was, I doubt they'd have made any noise at all. And they only said anything at all because Eddie Mair had them on about something else.

Yet, when friend of Liberty and convicted criminal and killer Lord Ahmed asks them to jump, they're on PM defending terrorists quicker than a human rights lawyer can issue an invoice.

To Liberty, human rights exist only on the left.
