Joke of the Week

From the Adam Smith Insistute
Being serious again, my column of the Week is Simon Jenkins in today's Sunday Times

'Indeed Brown has pulled off a remarkable coup in unearthing a libertarian conscience within modern Conservatism. David Davis, the Tory home affairs spokesman, usually a walking-talking police state, admits he can find “no evidence whatsoever” of the need for 56 days’ detention. For once the Tories are on the side of liberty’s angels. They must stay there if the government’s fifth antiterrorism law in office is not to be followed by many more. The boundary is a fine one between a paranoid state and a police one...'

Other column of the week: Matthew Norman in the Independent

Your suggestions welcome. Have a good Sunday,

The Conservative Party has been more libertarian than ZanuLabour for a number of years.

Jack Straw made Michael Howard look like a hippy.

The use of obscure laws to remove banners protesting the Chinese Premiers state visit from peaceful protesters was the first sign, I think.

Fine? Read your history books! The Weimar Republic was a democracy. Then came Hitler. Wake up, you fucking idiots!

Remember, it isnt democracy that has preserved our freedoms.

Our ancient liberties and freedoms where obtained, and sustained, a long time before we had a democracy.

Shortly before World War Two the Dutch held a census in which they asked everyone to state their religion. Then the Nazis came and rounded up the Jews. The Netherlands sent more people, percentage wise, to the concentration camps than any other country in Europe.
