Matthew Parris: columnist of the year

Matthew Parris won Columnist of the Year at the What the Papers Say Awards this year. Here's three good examples of why: Give me one good reason for replacing Trident - go on.
Let's say farewell to the 'ethnic minorities'

and especially this We could have protected the Ipswich women - we failed.
It's not just because I find myself in agreement with a lot of what he writes. It's the way he writes it as well: beautifully. Matthew Norman is my other favourite columnist, pointing the blunderbus of black humour and baroque vitriol upon the political rampaging elephants of the day.

Well, I don't know about you, but I need a friend. Be my friend?

I agree that Matthew Parris is a very good journalist. He deserves the award. At least it did not go to Melanie Fibs, or Polly Toynbee. However, I don't think anthing could have saved the Ipswich girls. People have been killing people ever since we evolved into the human race. One day we might get to the finish line and reach civilisation.

deb: We all need friends. But your link is a blank piece of paper and shows no profile.

I agree that Matthew Parris is a good journalist, but I'm afraid that he displays a very poor knowledge of drug addiction and the treatments that are available in this country.

His naive assumption that registering as a drug addict will enable that person to receive treatment that will cancel out the desire for heroin or crack is simply incorrect. Methadone is generally prescribed for heroin addiction and while it helps a little, it does not stop the consumption of heroin. Most addicts, even those who eventually stop by gradually reducing their intake, will continue to take heroin whle on methadone. The cold turkey option is too physically and mentally painful for most addicts to tolerate.

Why are people consistently misled into thinking Matthew Norman is anything other than a talentless chancer?
